While we won’t be starting our 2017-2018 Homeschool Year until October 23rd this year I’ve ALMOST completed my daughter’s 9th grade curriculum selection. This year seems to be so stressful since she is starting high school. We have been going back and forth on electives, history curriculum and science curriculum. Yikes! The middle school years went by way too fast! Since she is considering pursuing graphic design we’ve been doing research on what she’ll need going forward. Just thinking about everything some days makes my head swim but we are getting a handle on it, finally.
We cover the basic core subjects of Math, Language Arts (grammar, spelling, reading & writing), History with Geography and Science each year. This year, like last year, we also have art and music appreciation along with art journaling. I’ve also been thinking about which life skills we have to finish working on or start working on this year.
As I mentioned in an earlier post, my kids are four grades apart and we have been cycling through history and science, using the classical model of education in a relaxed way. That usually means that they study the same topics together at each child’s level. This year will be a little different since one will be in high school and one is in upper elementary. Even though they will be studying the same subjects it will be using different curriculum this year.
Both kids will be using Saxon Math again this year. We have tried different math curriculum be keep coming back to Saxon because the kids like it and find it easier for them to understand and retain math skills than other systems. We will also be using Learning Language Arts through Literature for both kids again too. We’ve done the grammar, spelling, reading and writing separate curriculum and it was just too much for the kids, and for me. Book lists, essay book reports and vocabulary lists will also be added to the LLATL curriculum to be sure we are covering everything.
Here is what we have lined up for this coming year:
Math – Saxon Math Algebra II
Language Arts (grammar, spelling, reading, writing) – Learning Language Arts through Literature: Gold World Literature Book
History – History of the Ancient World, The Timetables of History, DK History of the World
Geography – Concise Atlas of the World, The Good Land
Science (Biology) – Apologia – Exploring Creation with Biology OR Science Shepherd Biology
Art & Music Appreciation – Harmony Fine Arts: Grade 9
Art Journaling – Unit lessons created by Mom
Drafting – Practical Drafting, Unit Lessons created by Mom
